Sony Network Communications Inc. Realizes Wireless Remote Operation of Port Cranes at Shimizu Port
~Achieving Stable Video Transmission through Local 5G-Compatible DSA Technology~

Sony Network Communications Inc. has established a wireless communication environment at the Shin-Okitsu Container Terminal in Shimizu Port, Shizuoka Prefecture (Terminal Operator: Suzuyo & Co., Ltd.). This environment supports the wireless remote operation of Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes by utilizing Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) technology.

Collaborating with the remote operation system of Mitsui E&S Co., Ltd., the solution was officially implemented in December 2025 following a pre-commercial service period that began in December 2023.

Note: An RTG (Rubber-Tired Gantry crane) is a mobile crane used at ports for loading and unloading containers

Implementation Background

In addition to a remote operating system, realizing wireless remote RTGs requires stable, low-latency wireless transmission of multi-viewpoint video from several cameras mounted on each crane to the operator's console. For container yards in particular, multiple cranes move irregularly, often causing wireless traffic to concentrate at specific points.

While testing with standard local 5G equipment began at Shimizu Port in 2022, the constant movement of cranes caused data traffic to concentrate on specific base stations, making it difficult to transmit the high-capacity video data required for remote operation. To resolve this, the three companies collaborated to utilize DSA technology alongside standard 5G equipment, successfully achieving smooth and efficient operations.

This implementation ensures stable transmission of high-capacity video data. It establishes a highly reliable communication infrastructure capable of handling the video transmission scale equivalent to 10 cranes equipped with multi-viewpoint video functions, a feat that was difficult to guarantee under previous environments.

Future Outlook

The three companies will continue to promote safer working environments and improve overall port productivity by leveraging the wireless remote operation of port cranes enabled by DSA technology.

■Corporate Comments

Masamori Oba, Deputy General Manager, Container Terminal Dept., Suzuyo & Co., Ltd.
We have introduced cutting-edge DSA technology to ensure the sustainable operation of Shimizu Port. We aim to enhance onsite safety and build an advanced port environment where everyone can work safely.

Koji Oi, General Manager, Control System Dept., Logistics Systems Business Div., Mitsui E&S Co., Ltd.
Combining Sony Network Communications' DSA technology with our remote operating system has made stable operations possible. We will continue to contribute to the development of sustainable port infrastructure.

Daisuke Imiya, Head of Business Development Division, Sony Network Communications Inc.
As working environments and technical innovations evolve globally, the need for remote and autonomous onsite operations is rising rapidly. This transformation is supported by wireless technology, and we believe DSA, which provides a stable wireless environment, can make a significant contribution to society.
Realizing this in a port environment as a first step, we intend to contribute to efficiency and productivity across various fields requiring high-bandwidth, low-latency, and mobile wireless environments, such as robot utilization in logistics warehouses and private network construction for railways

Appendix

DSA technology can manage the use of the radio frequency spectrum (hereinafter “spectrum”") by exploiting radio environment information stored in a centralized database, optimizing spectrum assignment while mitigating interference among spectrum users. This enables a local 5G network designed for the wireless remote operation of RTG cranes to prevent traffic congestion and ensure a stable communication environment.

Expected benefits of introducing DSA to Wi-Fi or local 5G networks:
Improved Area Throughput:
Maximizes limited radio resources to significantly improve mobile traffic capacity, allowing more data to be processed simultaneously.
Enhanced Network Capacity:
Enables flexible area design suited for complex terrain or specific antenna setups, ensuring high-quality communication in diverse environments.
Reduced Costs for Adapting to Changes:
Automates the adjustment of radio interference and measures against signal leakage to neighboring stations/operators, improving operational efficiency and sustainability.
